Runes
Runes, or runestones, are an ancient form of divination and magical tool.In their crudest form, runes are symbols that are written or etched onto an object. Any letter of any alphabet is in a way, a kind of rune!
When we talk of runes we ususally aren't talking about modern alphabets. Runes ususally refers to ancient scripts from the Middle East and Northern Europe, which ancient tribes and races would use to mark their statues, tools, weapons, homes and anything to which they felt the need to attach spiritual significance. They might have wanted to protect their homes from negative influence and would therefore mark their homes with those runes which would draw protective energy. Or warriors might want to etch runes on their swords to draw the appropriate energy, protecting and blessing them in battle.
The best known set of Runes in the West are probably those immortalised by the writings of Ralph Blume, the Elder Futhark, a set of 24 runes used in Scandanavia and other northern European countries for many centuries. These runes consist of three sets of 8 runes, each group being governed by a differnt God from the Teutonic Pantheon. Ralph Blume also included a 25th rune, a blank rune representing the unknown, and unseeable, the leap into the void which we all have to take at some time in our lives.
Used in fortune telling, they provide a stark and accurate look at the situation which may disagree with how you see things at the time the runes are cast, but which often prove to have been entirely accurate, when a reading is re-visited months later.
